The two Champions League goals came in the 2-0 win at Porto on 8 September. Norway’s Nations League figures are from tracker counts, which show 3 goals in 4 appearances: two against Denmark and one against Portugal. Provider totals can differ by one assist.

Haaland and Alan Shearer’s Premier League Record
Alan Shearer’s 260 Premier League goals are the record Haaland talks about. He has 118 after 138 league games, so he needs 142 more. He is 26, and Shearer was 35 when he retired.
His season-by-season totals are 36, 27, 22 and 27, an average of 28 a year. At that rate he needs about five more full seasons, which puts the record in 2031/32. That is a projection, not a forecast. It assumes he stays at City or in the Premier League, and stays fit. He has already beaten Shearer to 100 goals by 13 games.
This season’s pace gives a sense of the target. To match his four-year average of 28 league goals he needs 22 more in City’s remaining 32 games, or about 0.69 a game, which is below his career rate of 0.86. If he scores at that career rate he finishes with about 33, the second-best total of his career after the 36 of 2022/23. Reaching 36 again would need almost a goal a game from here.
| SEASON | LEAGUE GOALS | NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| 2022/23 | 36 | Premier League single-season record, first season |
| 2023/24 | 27 | Second Golden Boot |
| 2024/25 | 22 | City finished third |
| 2025/26 | 27 | Third Golden Boot, five ahead of second place |
| 2026/27 (to 11 Oct) | 6 | Six games, six City wins |
| Total | 118 | Shearer: 260 |
The 2022/23 figure is a record for a 38-game season. League totals are from Manchester City and Premier League records.
What Erling Haaland’s Numbers Show
He scores almost every time he plays. He has 118 league goals in 138 games, 0.86 a game, and across all competitions for City he has 170 goals in 205 games. In 2025/26 he scored 0.82 goals per 90 minutes in the league, and Manchester City’s own count is one league goal every 98 minutes.
He finishes above the chances he gets. His non-penalty expected goals in 2025/26 were 23.76, and he scored 27 league goals. In the opening six games of this season he has 6 goals from 4.82 expected. The gap is not large, but it has appeared in several seasons, which is what a clinical finisher looks like in the data.
The team scores through him. City have scored 16 league goals in six games this season and Haaland has 6 of them, about 38%. That is a lot, and it matches his history, and City’s squad now includes Antoine Semenyo and Iliman Ndiaye, who give him more support in attack.
The assist numbers look low, but they are not nothing. He has 29 or 30 assists for City, depending on the provider, against 170 goals. The ratio is what you would expect for a pure striker. His value is in the penalty box and he does not need to drop deep to create.
Availability is the main risk. He played 52 games in 2025/26 and Guardiola rested him in some cup games. He has started all six league games this season. Injuries cost him matches in 2023/24 and 2024/25, and his fitness is the biggest unknown in the Shearer projection.
Early Life: Born in Leeds, Raised in Bryne
Haaland was born in Leeds on 21 July 2000, when his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was playing for Leeds United. Alf-Inge later played for Manchester City, and the family returned to Norway when Erling was three, settling in Bryne, a small town in the south-west of the country. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a heptathlete.
He grew up playing at Bryne, the club where his father had started, and he tried other sports as a child. He grew quickly in his mid-teens, and by 15 he was playing senior football for Bryne. His goalscoring in the youth ranks was already well ahead of his age group.
In 2017 he moved to Molde, the club coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and spent the next 18 months learning to play as a striker rather than a winger. When Solskjær left for Manchester United the player stayed, and by late 2018 he was scoring in the Norwegian league and in Europe. Several clubs were watching.
Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund
Salzburg signed him in January 2019, when he was 18. He scored in his first matches and helped the club win the Austrian league and cup. At the 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland he scored nine goals in one game, a 12-0 win over Honduras, and finished as the tournament’s top scorer. His Champions League debut for Salzburg produced a hat-trick against Genk.
Borussia Dortmund paid around €20 million for him in January 2020. He scored on his debut, and then kept scoring. Across two and a half seasons he played 89 games and scored 86 goals, won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and finished as the Champions League’s top scorer in 2020/21 with 10 goals. He also won the Golden Boy award for the best young player in Europe.
Dortmund could not keep him. His contract had a release clause that became active in the summer of 2022, and in May 2022 he agreed to join Manchester City for €60 million (£51.2 million). He left Germany as the most sought-after young forward in the game.
Manchester City: 170 Goals and Counting
The record-breaking first season. Haaland made his City debut at West Ham in August 2022 and scored twice. He scored a hat-trick in his first home game, against Crystal Palace, and went on to set a Premier League record with 36 goals in a 38-game season.
In all competitions he scored 52 goals, the most by any Premier League player in a single season, and he finished as top scorer in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. City won all three trophies, the first treble in the club’s history. He was named Premier League Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season, the only player to win both in the same year, and finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting behind Lionel Messi.
Injuries and a quieter spell. The next two seasons were harder. He scored 27 league goals in 2023/24 and won a second Premier League title and Golden Boot, but a foot injury cost him weeks of football. In 2024/25 he scored 22 league goals as City finished third, their weakest season in years, and he dealt with injury problems. His form also dipped in the winter, and for a while critics asked whether the physical toll had caught up with him.
The 2025/26 comeback. He returned to form in 2025/26. He reached 100 Premier League goals in December 2025, in 111 appearances, 13 quicker than Shearer, and finished the season with 27 league goals and a third Golden Boot, five clear of Igor Thiago of Brentford. City won the FA Cup and the League Cup and finished in the Champions League places, although Arsenal took the league title. Across the whole season he scored 38 goals and made 9 assists in 52 games, according to FBref, which differs from the 52 goals that some club material quotes.
A new manager. Pep Guardiola left in May 2026 after ten years, six Premier League titles and a Champions League. City appointed Enzo Maresca, who had been Guardiola’s assistant during the treble season, on a three-year contract in June. The start has been good: six league wins from six and two goals for Haaland at Porto in the Champions League. A harder test comes on 14 October at home to Paris Saint-Germain.
What Maresca has changed so far. City have won six of six in the league, scoring 16 goals and conceding 5. Three of the wins came away from home: 4-1 at Crystal Palace, 1-0 at Manchester United and 3-0 at Liverpool. The Sunderland game, a 5-3 win, showed the other side: the defence is leaking goals and City need Haaland and company to outscore the problem. It is early, but the team looks more direct than it did under Guardiola.

| UEFA Champions League | 40 | 36 | 2 |

Totals are as of 11 October 2026. The Champions League row combines tracker counts, and assist totals vary by one between providers: Manchester City’s own count is 29 through the end of last season.
Erling Haaland for Norway
Haaland made his Norway debut in 2019 and by October 2024 he was the country’s all-time top scorer. He now has 65 goals in 59 caps, which is more than one a game, and he scored 16 goals in World Cup qualifying, eight more than the next player in Europe. Norway had not reached a World Cup since 1998, and they got there on the back of his numbers.
The Nations League has been a favourite stage. He is the competition’s all-time top scorer with 22 goals, seven ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Aleksandar Mitrović. On 24 September 2026 he scored twice in a 3-2 win over Denmark, Norway’s first win against their neighbours in 26 years, and three days later he scored again in a 2-1 home loss to Portugal. Norway have 3 points from four games in their group.
Portugal played the game in Oslo without Cristiano Ronaldo, who had left their camp. Haaland’s goal made him the Nations League’s record scorer by seven. Afterwards he said he wanted to be judged on everything he does for the team and not only on goals.
Norway’s recent record at tournaments explains why the 2026 run mattered. The country had not been to a World Cup since 1998 and has not played at a European Championship since 2000. Haaland arrived at the first tournament of his career and scored in four of Norway’s six matches at the tournament. The challenge now is to keep that standard when the team plays Nations League games against Portugal and Denmark, and to qualify for the next European Championship, in 2028.
Haaland at the 2026 World Cup
Norway’s first World Cup in 28 years was also Haaland’s first major tournament. He scored twice in a 4-1 win over Iraq and twice more in a 3-2 win over Senegal that sent Norway into the knockout rounds. Coach Ståle Solbakken then rested him against France in the last group game, to the disappointment of the crowd in Boston.
The high point came on 5 July in New Jersey. Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16, with Haaland heading in a cross from Andreas Schjelderup in the 11th minute and scoring a second in the 90th, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland saved a first-half penalty. It was Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990. Norway then lost to England in the quarter-final in Miami on 11 July. Haaland finished the tournament with 7 goals.
| MATCH | RESULT | HAALAND |
|---|---|---|
| Group I: Iraq | 4–1 W | 2 goals |
| Group I: Senegal | 3–2 W | 2 goals |
| Group I: France | Not started | On the bench |
| Round of 32 | Won | 1 goal |
| Round of 16: Brazil | 2–1 W | 2 goals |
| Quarter-final: England | Lost | No goal |
Haaland scored once in every game he started in the tournament apart from the quarter-final. His first goal against Brazil was a header, and the other six goals in the competition had all been one-touch finishes.
Haaland in the Champions League
The Champions League has been Haaland’s best stage. By tracker counts he has 59 goals in 59 appearances across Salzburg, Dortmund and City. He was the competition’s top scorer in 2020/21 with Dortmund and again in 2022/23 with City, scoring 12 in the treble season, including five against RB Leipzig in a single game in March 2023. City won the trophy that year, beating Inter in the final in Istanbul.
This season started well, with two goals in the 2-0 win at Porto on 8 September. His next three Champions League games are at home to Paris Saint-Germain on 14 October, at home to AEK Athens on 20 October and away at RB Leipzig on 4 November. On 8 December City visit Barcelona, which sets up a meeting with Lamine Yamal. His 2025/26 return was 8 goals in 10 games, the same total as the year before in 9.

Erling Haaland and the Ballon d’Or
Haaland is on the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or, his sixth nomination. He finished second in 2023, behind Lionel Messi, after the treble season. The 2026 ceremony takes place on Monday 26 October at the London Palladium, the first time it has been held outside Paris.
His case rests on 27 Premier League goals and a third Golden Boot, an FA Cup and League Cup double, eight Champions League goals and seven at the World Cup in a run to Norway’s first quarter-final. The favourites in the betting are Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal, who won the World Cup with Spain. City travel to Arsenal, last season’s champions, on 29 November, a game that will show where they stand in the title race. Voting covered 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026, so his current form does not count.
Haaland and Yamal this season. The two most discussed names in the 2026 voting are having very different seasons so far. Haaland has 8 goals and no assists in 7 games for City. Yamal has 8 goals and 9 assists in 10 games for Barcelona. The Ballon d’Or voting window has closed, so these figures do not count towards the 2026 award, but they will shape the argument for 2027.

Playing Style, Strengths & Tactical Role
Haaland is a left-footed centre-forward who is 194 cm tall and fast for his size. That combination is rare. He can outrun most defenders in a straight race and beat most of them in the air, and he uses both skills to arrive in the box at the right moment.
Most of his goals come from a few yards out. He reads where crosses and cut-backs are going to land and makes the run before the defender has finished looking at the ball. The one-touch finish is his trademark: six of his seven World Cup goals were taken first time. He is a good penalty taker and has become more comfortable with chances created by his own feet.
The criticism is about build-up. He gets few touches in a game, and when City play slowly he can disappear. Under Guardiola he sometimes seemed to wait for the ball. Maresca wants a faster, more direct approach, and the early evidence is that Haaland is getting the service he wants.
| Finishing | 118 league goals in 138 games, and a clear overperformance of expected goals over four seasons. |
| Pace and power | Reaches top speed quickly for a player of 194 cm and is hard to dislodge once he has the ball. |
| Heading | A real threat on crosses: the first goal against Brazil at the World Cup was a header from Schjelderup. |
| Link play | Fewer touches than most forwards, but 29 or 30 assists for City show the passing is useful. |
| Penalty box movement | Finds space with early runs; most of his goals are inside the six-yard box. |
Injuries & Availability
| Current status | Available. No current injury was reported in the sources used for this page. |
| League starts 2026/27 | 6 of 6, with 530 league minutes |
| 2025/26 workload | 52 games for club, with some cup matches rested by Guardiola |
| Earlier setbacks | Injuries cost him games in 2023/24 and 2024/25 |
He was substituted in the 80th minute at Liverpool on 11 October after scoring, which looked like game management with City leading 3-0. He has not been linked with an injury since.
Premier League Golden Boot Race: Haaland in Context
| PLAYER | GOLDEN BOOTS | PREMIER LEAGUE GOALS |
|---|---|---|
| Thierry Henry | 4 | 175 |
| Mohamed Salah | 4 | n/a (still playing) |
| Alan Shearer | 3 | 260 |
| Harry Kane | 3 | n/a (left in 2023) |
| Erling Haaland | 3 | 118 (still playing) |
Harry Kane is the useful comparison. He won three Golden Boots at Tottenham and left for Bayern Munich in 2023 with 213 league goals. He is now a 2026 Ballon d’Or favourite himself. Haaland has reached 118 league goals in fewer games than Kane or Shearer needed to get there, and the two will rank behind each other in most all-time lists for years.
Haaland won his three Golden Boots in four seasons. Only Henry and Salah have won the award more often. He is the only Manchester City player to win it more than once. Salah’s total is still changing, and Kane’s is not shown because it was not confirmed in the sources used for this page.
What Comes Next for Haaland
He is 26, and his contract with City runs to 2034, so the next few years are not in doubt. The Shearer record, a second Champions League with Maresca’s City, and a Ballon d’Or are the three big targets. Norway’s side is built around him, and the 2030 World Cup would come when he is 29.
Maresca’s first season is the main variable. City have lost Guardiola’s system, and the club will want to see whether Haaland’s output holds up when the style changes. The early signs, six wins and eight goals in seven games, are encouraging.
For comparison with the next generation, you can read the Lamine Yamal profile. Yamal and Haaland are the two players the 2026 Ballon d’Or betting is likely to follow for the next few years.
Contract & Market Value
| Club | Manchester City |
| Contract Expires | June 2034 |
| Market Value | About €220 million (Transfermarkt), level with Lamine Yamal at the top of its rankings |
| Release Clause | Not publicly confirmed |
Market value is an estimate and not a transfer fee. Haaland signed a new ten-year contract in January 2025, and City have rebuilt their plans around him. His wage is not officially published.
Off the Pitch
Haaland comes from a football family: his father played in the Premier League, and his mother was a heptathlete. He is private about his personal life and gives few interviews. His goal celebration, in which he sits cross-legged and appears to meditate, has become one of the best-known in the sport. He has talked often about the importance of sleep, diet and recovery.
