Messi Retires From Argentina: The Farewell
Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, 1–0 after extra time, when Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute. On 31 August 2026 Messi announced that he was retiring from the national team, saying that after a lot of thought he knew it was the right time. The Argentine federation then invited him to play one more match at home, a friendly against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on 6 October.
He gave the 85,000 people in the stadium what they came for. Argentina won 3–0. Messi created the first two goals, a corner for Nicolás Otamendi, who was also playing his last game, and a pass for Nico Paz, and then scored the third himself from the penalty spot. It was his 208th cap, the most for any Argentine, and his 126th goal. He finished with 70 assists in a shirt he first wore against Hungary on 17 August 2005, a debut that lasted 47 seconds before he was sent off.
Argentina had said goodbye once before. On 31 March 2026, at La Bombonera, he scored and set up a goal in a 5–0 win over Zambia in what was billed as his last home game before the World Cup. That was not the last one after all. The Benin match was, and by all accounts it felt like one.

MLS figures are ESPN’s totals through the 10 October win over DC United: 24 starts and one substitute appearance, 157 shots and 65 on target. He leads the league in goals. The Campeones Cup row is the 2–0 win over Cruz Azul on 16 September, when he scored his 100th goal for the club with a header. World Cup figures cover all eight matches. Other Inter Miami competitions (Leagues Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup) and Argentina’s friendlies, including the Benin game, are not broken out because providers disagree on the totals. Wikipedia’s club page lists 27 goals in all Inter Miami competitions this season.
Recent Form
Messi scored in four of his last five Inter Miami games and in the Argentina farewell. On 29 August he scored four in a 7–1 win over CF Montréal, and on 10 October he scored twice in a 4–0 win over DC United. His team has been less consistent than he has: Miami drew with Atlanta, Chicago, Nashville and San Diego in September and lost at Columbus.

What Lionel Messi’s Numbers Show
He is still the best finisher in the league. Through 25 MLS games he has 23 goals, a rate of about 0.9 per 90 minutes, from 157 shots. About 41% of those shots (65) were on target. He also takes the penalties and many of the free kicks. Across his Inter Miami career he has scored 10 free kicks and 5 penalties among his first 100 goals, plus four hat-tricks.
Miami lean on him heavily. The club scored 68 league goals in its first 28 games and Messi had 23, roughly a third. The team also let in 50 in that stretch. That imbalance explains why a side with a 4–0 win on the books can also be beaten 4–1 at Nashville in August. When Messi plays, Miami can outscore most opponents. When the defence is stretched, the margin disappears.
The assists did not drop with age. He has 13 assists in 25 games this season after 19 in 28 games last year. FootyStats puts his expected assists at about 9, so the chances he creates are real, even if some finishes beat the odds. In the Argentina farewell he set up two goals in one night, and he finished with more international assists than any Argentine.
The World Cup tells you about the ceiling. At 39 he scored 8 goals in 8 games in a tournament played in heat and across three countries, and he won the Silver Ball and the Silver Boot. Argentina reached a second straight final, and it was lost on a single goal in extra time.
Fitness is the one variable. He started 24 of Miami’s league games and came off the bench once, so he has been available for most of the season. Miami and Argentina have both managed his minutes carefully, and the club’s coach changed in mid-September when Kily González took over. How Messi fits with a new coach and a playoff run is the main question left in 2026.
Early Life: From Rosario to La Masia
Messi was born in Rosario, a port city in the province of Santa Fe, to Jorge Messi, a steelworker, and Celia Cuccittini. He started playing as a child and joined the youth system at Newell’s Old Boys, the club his family supported. Coaches there noticed quickly that he was smaller than the other boys and far better with the ball.
At around ten he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. The treatment was expensive, and his family could not keep paying for it. River Plate showed interest but did not commit to covering the cost. Barcelona did. In 2000 the club offered the family a contract, and Messi moved to Spain at 13 to join La Masia, the club’s academy. He lived and trained there while his family settled in Catalonia, and the club paid for his medical care.
The early years were not easy. He was homesick, and he was shy. But he moved up through the age groups quickly, and he was training with the first team by his mid-teens. In 2004, at 17 years and 114 days, he made his senior debut against Espanyol. Six months later he scored his first goal, against Albacete, with an assist from Ronaldinho.
Barcelona: 17 Years, 672 Goals
Messi played 778 games for Barcelona in all competitions, scored 672 goals and made 303 assists. The goals are the most any player has scored for one club. His 474 in LaLiga are also a record. The numbers are so large that they can hide how the career developed, so it helps to split it into chapters.
The Ronaldinho years (2004 to 2008). He arrived as a teenage winger in a team built around Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco. He won LaLiga in 2005 and 2006 and the Champions League in 2006, though injury kept him out of the final. His first real breakout came in 2007, when he scored a goal against Getafe in the Copa del Rey that echoed Maradona’s famous run against England in 1986.
The Guardiola years (2008 to 2012). Pep Guardiola took over in 2008, and by the following season Messi was the centre of the team. Guardiola moved him from the right wing to a central position, as a false nine, with Xavi and Iniesta behind him. In 2009 Barcelona won six trophies in one calendar year, including the Champions League final against Manchester United in Rome, where Messi scored with a header. He won his first Ballon d’Or that year. In 2011 Barcelona beat United again at Wembley, and Messi scored again. The 2011/12 season produced 73 goals in all competitions, and in the calendar year 2012 he scored 91, a record that passed Gerd Müller’s old mark of 85.
The Luis Enrique years (2014 to 2017). After a quieter spell, Barcelona won the treble in 2014/15 with Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar in attack. The Champions League final that year, a 3–1 win over Juventus in Berlin, was the club’s fifth European Cup. He won his fifth Ballon d’Or in the same season. The trio is still counted among the best forward lines of any era.
The long goodbye (2017 to 2021). As Xavi, Iniesta and Neymar left, Messi became the player who did everything. He captained the team, took penalties and free kicks, dropped deep to create and still finished as top scorer. He won the European Golden Shoe in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and a sixth Ballon d’Or in 2019. Barcelona’s Champions League exits, including a 4–0 loss at Liverpool in 2019 and an 8–2 defeat to Bayern Munich in 2020, showed that the team around him had weakened. He won the Copa del Rey for the last time in 2021.
The exit. In August 2021 Barcelona told him they could not renew his contract because of LaLiga’s financial rules. He cried at his farewell press conference. The club that had raised him let him go for nothing, and it was one of the most surprising moves of the modern game.

Adding the club and country goals above gives roughly 930 senior goals as of mid-September 2026, and he has scored more since. Argentina assist totals differ by provider; some list 67 rather than 70.
Messi in El Clásico. No player has scored more goals in matches against Real Madrid. His 26 Clásico goals came in 45 games, and several of them decided league titles. The best remembered is the 2017 winner at the Bernabéu, when he scored in stoppage time and held his shirt up to the home crowd. For a decade, results against Madrid defined how people measured Barcelona, and Messi was usually the reason they won.
Paris Saint-Germain: Two Titles, No European Cup
Messi signed for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021, wearing No. 30, and joined a front line that included Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. The first season was difficult. He scored six league goals and spent a good part of the winter injured or sick. PSG won Ligue 1 but were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 16, with Mbappé scoring the late goals.
His second season was much better. He finished with 16 goals and 16 assists in Ligue 1, and he won the World Cup in December 2022. PSG won the league again, but they lost in the Champions League round of 16, this time to Bayern Munich. In total he played 75 games for the club, scored 32 goals, made 35 assists and won two Ligue 1 titles and one Trophée des Champions. He left in June 2023 amid tension with fans, and chose Inter Miami over a return to Barcelona and a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.
Inter Miami: A Trophy Every Season
Messi joined Inter Miami on a free transfer in July 2023. The club, co-owned by David Beckham, was bottom of the Eastern Conference. In his first game he scored a stoppage-time free kick against Cruz Azul, and the team won the Leagues Cup that summer, the club’s first trophy. Since then Miami have won something every year with him.
In 2024 Miami broke the MLS points record and took the Supporters’ Shield, and Messi was named MLS Most Valuable Player after scoring 20 goals in 19 games. In 2025 he scored 29 goals with 19 assists in 28 regular-season games and won the MVP award a second time. Miami won the 2025 MLS Cup, beating Vancouver Whitecaps 3–1 in the final, with Messi providing two assists and taking the final’s MVP award. It was the club’s first league title.
The 2026 season has had more drama. Miami went out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the round of 16 and failed to get past the Leagues Cup league phase. On 16 September the club named Kily González as head coach, and in his first game Miami beat Cruz Azul 2–0 to win the Campeones Cup. Messi scored his 100th goal for the club in that game, a header from a Luis Suárez cross, in record time. It was the fourth trophy of his time in Florida and, by the count of Major League Soccer, his 48th as a professional.
Messi signed a new contract that runs to December 2028. He will be 41 when it ends. The Argentine national team is now behind him, which means he can plan his seasons around Miami, and the club has stated plainly that it hopes to build around him until he decides to stop.
His effect on MLS. The league’s numbers moved when he arrived. Stadiums sold out on the road, shirt sales jumped, and the league’s media partner, Apple, built a subscription service around Messi games. The service did not make the money the partners hoped, and the two sides renegotiated their contract so that it ends three years earlier than planned. Whatever the arithmetic, Messi changed how many people outside the United States watch MLS, and he stayed in the league past the point when most observers expected him to leave.
Argentina: 21 Years in the Shirt
Messi made his senior debut on 17 August 2005 and was sent off 47 seconds into the match. For the next decade he carried the weight of a country that had not won a major senior trophy since 1993. Argentina reached the 2007 Copa América final, lost it, and lost three more finals: the 2014 World Cup final to Germany, and the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals to Chile on penalties. After the 2016 loss he announced his retirement, then reversed the decision within weeks.
The turn came in 2021. Under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina beat Brazil 1–0 in the Copa América final at the Maracanã, and Messi won his first senior international trophy at 34. Eleven months later Argentina beat Italy 3–0 in the Finalissima at Wembley. In December 2022 they won the World Cup in Qatar, beating France on penalties after a 3–3 draw in a final that many call the best ever played. Messi scored twice, won the Golden Ball for the second time and lifted the trophy.
He added the 2024 Copa América, a 1–0 extra-time win over Colombia in Miami, then returned for the 2026 World Cup as a defending champion at 39. He played all eight games, scored eight goals, added four assists and led Argentina past Egypt in the round of 16 (3–2) and England in the semi-final (2–1). The final against Spain ended 1–0 in extra time. He took the Silver Ball and the Silver Boot, and a few weeks later he announced that he was done.
His final record: 208 caps, 126 goals, 70 assists. Both the appearance and goal totals are the highest ever recorded for Argentina. He played 34 World Cup matches, the most by any player, 26 of them as captain, and he scored 21 World Cup goals, second only to Kylian Mbappé’s 22.
Argentina after Messi. Argentina ranked second in the FIFA men’s rankings after the 2026 World Cup, and coach Lionel Scaloni has a team with several players in their twenties, including Julián Álvarez, Lautaro Martínez and Nico Paz. Otamendi, 38, also played his last game against Benin. The harder question is the role Messi filled, the player who creates and scores in the same match. No single replacement exists, so Scaloni will probably have to spread that work across several players. The captain’s armband will pass to someone else for the first time in more than a decade.

In 2026 the ceremony takes place on 26 October at the London Palladium. Bookmakers priced Messi at 22/1 in mid-October, level with Kylian Mbappé and well behind the leaders. His 2025/26 claim rests on his MLS season, the Campeones Cup and a World Cup in which he scored 8 goals at 39.

Playing Style, Strengths & Tactical Role
Messi is a left-footed attacker who has played almost everywhere across the front of a team. He started as a right winger who cut inside, became a false nine under Guardiola, and spent his later Barcelona years as a free-roaming playmaker. At Inter Miami he plays as a second striker or an inside forward, with the freedom to drop into midfield.
His dribbling is built on balance and a low centre of gravity. He changes direction at speed without losing the ball, and he rarely commits to a touch that leaves him exposed. Close control is the part people notice, but the more useful skill is timing: he knows when to accelerate, when to slow the game down and when to release the pass. He has also become more economical with age, covering less ground but picking better moments to make runs.
Finishing is the other half. He scores with his left foot from range and inside the box, with a chip or a placed shot, and he has added headers in recent seasons. His free kicks are a long-running feature, and he takes penalties with a calm, short run-up. Passing completes the picture: his through balls have long been his most dangerous weapon, and the 70 Argentina assists and 303 Barcelona assists reflect that.
| Dribbling | Still elite for his age. He beats players with changes of pace and direction rather than raw speed. |
| Passing and vision | His assist numbers have held up. He set up two goals in a single game in his Argentina farewell. |
| Finishing | 23 MLS goals in 25 games this season, 157 shots and 65 on target. |
| Set pieces | 10 free-kick goals and 5 penalties among his first 100 Inter Miami goals. |
| Off the ball | Conserves energy away from the ball, then accelerates when the space opens. |
Messi’s Legacy
Arguments over who is the greatest player of all time never end, and they do not need to. What is not in dispute is the length and the volume of his work. He has scored more than 900 senior goals, won almost every club and international honour on offer, and done it across three continents. Few players have stayed at the top of the game for twenty years, and none has won as many individual awards.
The World Cup was the missing piece until 2022, and he fixed that. The 2026 tournament added a footnote: at 39 he scored eight goals and led Argentina to a second straight final. Whether he is rated above Pelé, Maradona or Cristiano Ronaldo depends on what a person values, but the case rests on more than one trophy. It rests on consistency, on creativity, and on how little his output dropped as he aged.
His effect on the places he played is also measurable. Barcelona built a decade of success around him. Inter Miami went from the bottom of the East to a championship club, and Major League Soccer’s global profile changed with his signing, to the point that the league and Apple renegotiated their media deal around him. For Argentina, he turned a generation of near misses into a World Cup, two Copa Américas and a Finalissima.
Messi and Lamine Yamal: The Next Generation
The most common comparison for any young Barcelona attacker is Messi, and Lamine Yamal invites it more than most. Yamal wears the No. 10 shirt at Barcelona, came through La Masia like Messi, and plays on the right with a left foot that likes to cut inside. A photograph of him as a baby alongside Messi spread widely during Euro 2024. Yamal was runner-up in the 2025 Ballon d’Or, and in 2026 he is among the favourites while Messi sits well back in the betting. The two are 20 years apart, and the comparison only goes so far, but it shows how the game is changing hands. You can read the full numbers in the Lamine Yamal profile.
Contract, Salary & Market Value
| Club | Inter Miami |
| Contract Expires | 31 December 2028 |
| 2026 MLS Salary | $28.3 million (MLS Players Association) |
| Total Earnings | Club co-owner Jorge Mas has said $70 to $80 million a year including sponsorships and a revenue-sharing deal with Apple |
| Market Value | About €16 to 17 million (trackers differ). Age is the main factor. |
Market value formulas weigh age heavily, so Messi’s figure is far below his influence on the pitch and in commercial terms. His salary is by far the highest in MLS: the next player on the list earned about $11 million in 2026.
Off the Pitch
Messi is married to Antonela Roccuzzo, a childhood friend from Rosario. They have three sons, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro. The family lives in Miami, and they were in the stadium in Buenos Aires for the Benin farewell. He runs the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports children’s health and education, and he has been a UNICEF ambassador. He is famously private, rarely gives interviews, and prefers to let his play do the talking.
